Vintage linen, hand embroidered with the image of The Devil card from Pamela Colman Smith’s classic illustrations of the tarot.
The Devil tarot artwork depicts Baphomet, a half-man, half-goat, with two human figures chained to the pedestal beneath him. Baphomet’s hypnotic stare and draws you in, and his bat wings imply he’ll suck the life out of you as you come closer. The figures below, though chained, appear able to free themselves, but they remain, having sprouted tails and horns like their captor, becoming more like him the longer they stay.
The Devil card has us look at our shadow selves, the “darker” parts of us that cause shame. In hiding these aspects of ourselves (or hiding from them), there is a danger of falling deeper and deeper into harmful distractions - a pursuit of pleasure or lust that can spin out of control and become an addiction. The Devil encourages us to have clear eyes when looking at ourselves and our behaviors, to acknowledge the truth without shame, and to empower ourselves to make choices that free us.
I chose to embroider The Devil on this vintage linen because of its netted border. Each delicate strand on its own can’t hold against our will, but all of them woven and tied together are strong enough to capture us in their web. It’s up to us to see we’ve been trapped and to consciously work our way out of the trap. As I was working on this piece, I caught a thread of the web and it pulled away from the others. The breaking free began, and so I left that thread loose.
This piece measures approximately 12" x 15".
