You see me, small and strange
Torment me,
And you’ll know the full force of my power

Vintage linen, hand embroidered with a portrait of Carrie, in all blood-red thread.

The subject of this piece is the titular Carrie, from the 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. It’s fucking iconic and you should just watch it if you haven’t already, but the gist is that Carrie is a young woman, tormented by an abusive mother at home and her classmates at school. She hasn’t been taught about menstruation or any of the changes that come with becoming a woman – she’s all on her own. Meanwhile, she’s developing telekinetic powers, which her religious mother is convinced are evidence of witchcraft and sin. Carrie goes to the prom, where her asshole classmates prank her into becoming prom queen, then dumping a bucket of slain pigs’ blood over Carrie on the stage. Carrie’s reaction creates a chain of events that leads to the death of everyone at the prom, which she exits still dripping with blood, flames at her back. And don’t worry, Mom gets her comeuppance, too.

Carrie is a young woman with no support, no friendship, no love, no knowledge. She’s abused nearly every direction she turns to for help. Her body is changing and her powers are growing and she has no resources to help her navigate it all. She’s made to feel small, weak, wrong, disgusting. When her rage is finally unleashed, its power is so strong that it destroys everything, including Carrie herself.

Vintage cotton piece, measures approximately 11” at widest and 17.5” at tallest points
